WELCOME TO THE PLAYHOUSE!
Part performance art, part community play-date, and 100% social experiment, Me-Wee’s Playhouse is a whimsical, child-like sanctuary designed for
"grown-ass folk" to explore what it means to be siblings within the “United States of Traumatization.”
WAIT... IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?
At its core, the project asks a question that feels
nearly impossible in our current climate: Is it possible to find a measure of levity within our profound inability to discuss race, power, and colonial trauma? By approaching these heavy truths with a "beginner’s mind," we navigate the painful delusions of whiteness and the invisible constrictions
of racialization within a"sacred-silly" safe space.
WHAT IS THIS PARTICULAR INNER-TAINMENT?
The medium of this project is intentionally maximalist and hybrid, designed to move beyond traditional theater and shift how an audience experiences becoming a collective.
By harnessing the neon-bright, hyper-sensory aesthetic of 1980s Saturday morning television, I transform into Me-Wee: a mild-mannered monster with singing, dancing "clown-tits"born of colonial trauma. Aptly named “Chuckle and Suck,” these puppeted"Holy Fool-boobs"serve as a disruptive force, circumventing rigid social hierarchies by"milking"their inherent absurdities.
They provide the foundation for us to finally
address systemic delusions through the lens of play.
PHASE 1: THE DIGITAL HAUNTED HOUSE
The journey begins online via a cerebral haunted house hosted on the Gather platform.
Here, participants create avatars to navigate a digital space where video and audio connections are proximity-based, mimicking the intimacy of in-person interaction from the comfort of our chosen spaces.
This digital framework allows us to explore the "scary work" of addressing generational trauma and what feels for many like“fascism-fatigue”not by rushing to "fix" it, but by being still enough to simply listen.
Participants navigate rooms that spark reflection,
make ancestral offerings on virtual altars, and even visit "Me-Wee’s Burlesque," where they are enticed to "strip off" their categorical bodies and generate
a spiritual stripper name for good measure!
This preparatory phase ensures that when participants arrive at the physical Playhouse, they do so as a group that has already navigated an unknown universe together.
PHASE 2: THE PLAYHOUSE LIVE
Enter a hyper-sensory, 1980s-inspired world where we address what itmeans to be spiritual beings having very human experiences, through collective presence. In the physical Playhouse, we don't seek immediate solutions; instead, we find the courage to listen, play, and collapse together. Here, we make our way from the rafters of the Playhouse down to the roots, where even the mycelium below the floorboards are singing songs of what it takes to collectively reboot.
Come, let's play with the transformative
power that our collective imaginationshave to challenge the status quoand to shape new worlds.
